A completely planned city, Coral Gables offers fountains, esplanades, plazas
and numerous historic landmarks. The Venetian Pool, constructed in 1924 from
a former limestone quarry, is emptied nightly during the summer months and replenished
by an aquifer that lies under it. Another landmark worth visiting in Coral Gables
is the Biltmore Hotel and County Club, a regal resort constructed in the late
1920s, complete with a copper-clad tower and Mediterranean Revival-style architecture.
A 700,000 gallon pool and an 18-hole golf course are two of the resort's amenities.
The University of Miami is based in Coral Gables and features the Lowe Art Museum
and its collection of Renaissance and Baroque artwork. Visit the Miracle Mile
to take in over 170 shops, 40 restaurants, theaters and art galleries. Of course,
Coral Gables also makes a great base to sample what the Miami area offers, including
Miami Beach.
